On view in SECCA's Preview Gallery, the latest iteration of SECCA's Southern Idiom exhibition series features ...of a circular nature, a collection of watercolor paintings by Sharon Hardin. Works on view will be available for purchase. Admission to the exhibition is free, with a suggested $10 donation.
Join us for a special reception with the artist on Saturday, May 8 from 1pm to 4pm. The artist will be demonstrating her creative process throughout the reception. Visitors are encouraged to bring a flower with them, to be incorporated into the work by the artist.
ARTIST BIO
Sharon Hardin has been painting with watercolor for the past three decades. Her work has been exhibited locally, regionally and nationally as well as internationally. Publications include the text Art Talk by Rosalind Ragans. Hardin has worked as an Artist-in-Residence and an Arts Educator with local and state Arts Councils in Illinois, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
Hardin has been selected to jury and curate exhibitions on local, regional and national levels. She participated on juries of selection for the Georgia Arts Council, Winston-Salem Arts Council and Piedmont Craftsman, among others. Hardin is a past Visiting Artist and Instructor of Design at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Director of the Davis Gallery at Sawtooth School for Visual Art, and Drawing and Design Instructor at Salem College.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Hardin's work in watercolor is organic, with forms inspired by nature, experience, and imagination. The paintings are created using transparent watercolor in a traditional manner - no white or black pigment. Some works contain the additional elements of embroidery thread or watercolor pencil. Subject matter includes mandala based imagery, moon influenced creation theories, circular energy and natural phases.
All explore a visual language as interpretation.

SECCA's Southern Idiom exhibition series launched in 2017 as a platform for elevating and celebrating the work of Winston-Salem artists. In contrast to many exhibitions at SECCA, works on view in Southern Idiom are available for purchase. Sharon Hardin's exhibition marks the 20th installment of the series, whose alumni artists include Terri Dowell-Dennis, Ashley Johnson, Frank Campion, Mona Wu, Owens Daniels, Jessica Singerman, Leo Rucker, Kevin Calhoun, Paul Travis Phillips, Laura Lashley, Sam "The Dot Man" McMillan, and others.
