How Choices Create Meaning
This full-day workshop for K12 educators that explores how artists and writers use choices in form and language to construct, communicate, and sometimes destabilize meaning. Using contemporary art as a lens, participants will investigate the relationship between words and images, and experience how the language we use to describe something can shape the understanding of others.
This workshop is organized around four verbs: describe, contrast, transform, and complicate. Through four connected sessions, educators will examine how creators build meaning through observation and description, the use of contrasting elements, the transformation of ideas across media, and moments of ambiguity or contradiction. Contemporary art offers a way for students to make these abstract concepts visible and provides teachers with new ways to support close reading, strengthen vocabulary, and help students make intentional choices in their own writing and artwork.
Educators will leave with practical teaching strategies, classroom-ready activities, and a fresh perspective on using art to create and interpret meaning.
Educators from all grade levels and subject areas are welcome.
Designed around ELA and Visual Arts standards for Middle School and High School, the workshop emphasizes inquiry, critical thinking, creativity, and literacy.
Participants will receive:
- 0.8 CEU (includes a pre-assignment)
- $100 stipend for participating in the program
- Mileage reimbursement ($0.50 per mile)
- Morning coffee, breakfast pastries, snacks, lunch
