Overview
Join artist Leah Smith for an intimate, artist-led exploration of Process as Practice: Three Artists from Western North Carolina. During this informal gallery tour, Smith will share insights into her work, materials, and creative process.
Following the tour, put new insights into practice with a collaborative activity inspired by Smith’s approach to making. Working together on a large-scale drawing, participants can experiment with mark-making and negative space to build and transform an original composition. This hands-on experience offers an opportunity to look closely, ask questions, and see what happens when individual marks and ideas come together.
LEAH SMITH
Leah Smith is a Canton, NC-based artist whose works are currently on view in Process as Practice: Three Artists from Western NC at NCMA Winston-Salem Downtown. Born in California, raised in Colorado from an early age, and now based in western North Carolina, Smith incorporates creative techniques and practices that convey historical connections between the natural world, material, and human thought. Her creative process is distinct, utilizing slow progression and celebrating the natural imperfections that she then relates to every part of nature. Her work is not intended to be reduced to words, but rather to be a grounding experience.
